Yesterday, I had a conversation with John, who purchased the Salesforce Resume Revamp program.
He is currently interviewing for a Salesforce position. It is open because the company is firing their consulting firm. However, the consultants helped draft the job description.
One of the job requirements is that the candidate has the Advanced Administrator certification.
John asked probing questions about how much of a requirement that Advanced Admin certification truly was.
After a spirited discussion, the recruiting team said "You know what? We're not married to the idea of the candidate needing the Advanced Admin certification."
In fact, they admitted that they blindly regurgitated the job description from the consultants, without understanding what they wanted out of the role.
In fact, John helped started to help them come up with a vision for what the role should look like! I'm hopeful John will get the role.
What's the lesson here?
- Lots of Salesforce job descriptions are haphazardly put together and may not accurately reflect the true requirements and expectations of the role. Apply anyway.
- It is important not to be deterred from applying for a position simply because you don't meet all the listed requirements.
- Ask probing questions and you might discover concessions that hiring managers are willing to make.
